Chromium, a natural regulator of sugar levels

Any sweet tooth? Uncontrolled snacking? Perpetual feelings of hunger? Maybe there's a link to a possible chromium deficiency. You never hear enough about chromium. Chromium is a trace element present in very small quantities in our body: 6 mg. It has many properties, not the least of which is that it plays a role in regulating our blood sugar levels.

In this article, you will discover how chromium acts on the regulation of the sugar level in our body and how important it is to provide it through diet. If diet is not enough, you can supplement.

What is chromium?

Chromium is a trace element found in small quantities in the diet. It is mainly found in seafood , oilseeds (almonds, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts), organ meats, potatoes, bananas and broccoli. Nevertheless, it plays a number of important roles in our bodies, notably in the metabolism of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates.

Our blood sugar is regulated by the pancreas, and more specifically by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans, which secrete a very specific hormone: insulin. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar levels in the body. In the case of a pathology such as diabetes, insulin secretion is disrupted or even non-existent.

Diabetes is defined as chronic hyperglycemia, i.e. fasting blood glucose levels above 1.26 g/L.

There are two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is defined as a complete lack of insulin secretion. As the pancreas no longer secretes this hormone, the blood glucose level is no longer regulated and this leads to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) frequently. Hyperglycaemia manifests itself in palpitations, dizziness, cold sweats and nausea.

Type 2 diabetes is defined as insulin-resistant, meaning that diabetics continue to secrete insulin, but their body cells have developed insulin resistance. In other words, thereceptors in their cells no longer recognize insulin, which can no longer perform its role. The result is a rise in blood sugar levels that can have serious consequences.

When insulin secretion is disrupted, feelings of hunger are more keenly felt, and usually satisfied by a sweet craving. Hunger is in fact regulated by two hormones: ghrelin and insulin. When their actions are disrupted, weight gain is generally observed. It's a vicious circle you'll want to get out of.

The benefits of chromium over sugar

Chromium increases the sensitivity of our cells to insulin and thus actively participates in the regulation of the sugar level in our body by helping insulin to bind to our cells. During food intake, the level of this hormone increases and chromium intervenes to play its role.

This property was officially discovered over 60 years ago and yet we still don't talk enough about the benefits of chrome. By regulating the appetite, it can help with weight loss.

So, whether you're diabetic or not, it's best to eat a balanced and varied diet. Opt for seasonal fruit and vegetables, wholegrain cereals, legumes (lentils, kidney beans, etc.) and oleaginous fruits (almonds, walnuts, etc.). These foods are all high in fiber, which helps reduce the Glycemic Index of your meals. This index corresponds to the speed at which the carbohydrates we consume reach our bloodstream. The higher theGlycemic Index, the faster the sugars ingested will be present in the bloodstream, resulting in hyperglycemia. Insulin plays its part in reducing blood sugar levels, but this results in fat storage and weight gain. Fiber will help you avoid this. You should also avoid taking sugary products outside mealtimes, as they tend to enter the bloodstream very quickly if taken in isolation, and you now know the consequences of this. Finally, if you're not getting enough chromium on your plate, you can opt for a suitable dietary supplement.
